On July 22 at 7:00 PM, audiences of the TheatreHD Opera Club at the GUM Cinema Hall are in for "opera as great cinema about love"! That is how the Austrian press described the two one-act verismo masterpieces – Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" and Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" – in the production by Philipp Stölzl, which became a true sensation of the 2015 Salzburg Easter Festival. Star tenor Jonas Kaufmann captivated audiences with his flawless performance of two roles that were debuts for him in a single evening: the Sicilian peasant Turiddu in "Cavalleria Rusticana" and the jealous clown Canio in "Pagliacci".
The special screening of this unique production will be presented by opera critic Tatiana Belova – a well-known figure to regular TheatreHD audiences – who is head of editorial activities at the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum, as well as a theatre scholar, playwright, and lecturer.

Director Philipp Stölzl, known for his work on Rammstein music videos and the Bregenz production of "Der Freischütz", transformed the vast stage of the Großes Festspielhaus into a cinematic multi-level pavilion: mass scenes unfold below, while intimate emotional moments are projected on screens in close-up above. The sun-drenched Sicilian village from "Cavalleria Rusticana" became a black-and-white industrial town of the mid-20th century, and the colourful "Pagliacci" turned into "cinema within cinema". The result is incredibly spectacular!
